Appia Wine Road

titol Appia Wine Road - Tenute BellaMarina

In July 2024, the Via Appia Antica, in its final stretch leading to Brindisi, was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, a recognition that highlights one of the Mediterranean’s most significant historical routes. Regarded as the first ‘motorway’ in history, the road linked Rome to the port of Brindisi, from where travellers, goods and cultures set off towards the East.

Along this ancient route, agriculture and viticulture flourished, contributing to the region’s economic growth. Today, the Appia Wine Road Association brings together wineries and producers who safeguard this heritage, offering wine tourism experiences that combine history, landscape and wine culture.

The Experience

Tenute Bellamarina is a family-run organic winery situated in the countryside around Torre Santa Susanna, just a few hundred metres from the ancient Via Appia. The historic estate lies within the territory of the Feudo di Galesano, in a location that provides an ideal link between important Messapian sites such as Muro Tenente, Muro Maurizio and the archaeological site of San Pietro in Crepacore.

The experience includes a guided tour of the winery’s production areas, the barrel cellar and the processing areas, with an explanation of the main stages of winemaking. The tour concludes with a guided tasting of three representative wines from the winery, designed to illustrate the connection between native grape varieties, iron-rich clay soils and the Mediterranean microclimate typical of the Salento region.

Depending on the weather, it is possible to take a walk through the vineyards to observe the cultivated varieties and the organic farming techniques used up close.
